In the exhibition Tasting Water, artist Carol Marie Vossler utilizes sculpture and pulp-painting to metaphorically address water pollution within the Lake Champlain Basin. Through handmade paper sculptures and pulp paintings, her project explores the intricate challenges facing the Lake Champlain Basin.

Her approach centers on sustainable art practices, transforming cotton rags, garden remnants, and invasive plants collected from local lakes into meaningful works. Inspired by Dr. Curt Stager’s Still Waters, Vossler draws from his blend of scientific knowledge and lyrical narrative, which evokes powerful imagery and deepens her understanding of the unseen dynamics within lake environments.

Art offers a uniquely intuitive path to connect with nature, forging relationships that transcend data. Merging creative expression with climate science, united by ecological perspective and future-oriented thinking creates a narrative that captures the essence of the Lake Champlain watershed.

Artist's Statement

Environmental issues like habitat loss and pollution in my watershed motivate my art. My practice which uses handmade cotton rag, low-fire ceramics, and found objects are used to highlight climate change concerns. These materials are transformed into pulp-paintings (two-dimensional work, created by pouring liquid pulp into a frame submerged in water), mixed-media sculptures and sheets of paper made out of organic garden waste. Turning plant material into pulp and then into paper is a powerful metaphor for change and new beginnings. This concept inspires how I create art, guiding both my sculptural work and my papermaking projects. My artwork has been exhibited in multiple indoor and outdoor settings for audience engagement.  My aspiration is that it encourages people to connect with others to discuss, truly listen, and work together to find solutions that benefit both nature and society.

A companion piece to this exhibit are special soundscapes created by Donald Paulson, retired teacher and long-time professional colleague and friend of Carol Marie Vossler. The works Carol is presenting profoundly reminds us of our need to care for life-giving water.

Don's interest in sound creation and music production are life-long passions. Like many creatives driven back into studios during the COVID crisis, he took that chance to discover new tools and techniques. In his case, exploring new ways to craft sound and build soundscapes.

His self-imposed exile freed him to experiment with Ableton Live music software. He discovered amazing sound and synthesis tools and now uses them to make expressive, ambient soundscapes.
