VISION - INTERPRETATION - CREATION

Carl Rubino's Lens:

A Retrospective of Vision, Interpretation, Creation in Abstract, Contemporary Landscape and Conceptual Photography.

Carl is largely a self-taught fine art photographer who lives year-round in the Adirondacks of northern New York.  He photographs primarily in his native location and the surrounding region.

Carl constantly challenges himself to explore new ways to see and interpret what lies before him, following Thoreau’s expression that “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”  He frequently uses techniques including in-camera multiple exposure, macro and reflection in his contemporary digital photography and zone exposure and other time-honored techniques in his black and white photography with vintage film cameras. His subjects include landscape, human form, architectural, found textures and whatever else captures his attention, often rendering his work in abstract compositions or conceptual projects.

Carl’s photography has been reviewed, and repeatedly featured as a portfolio winner, in Black & White Magazine.  His photos have been published in Adirondack Life and Seven Days, Vermont.  Carl’s photography has been exhibited in solo exhibitions at VIEW, Northwind Fine Art and Point of View Gallery in northern New York; Legacy Gallery in Nyack, NY; SEABA, Shelburne Art Center, Lille Fine Art Salon, Designhaus and Brickels Gallery in Burlington, VT; and Diana Felber Gallery in the Berkshires, MA. He has been featured in two-artist exhibitions at Lake Placid Center for The Arts.  He has been in juried and curated exhibitions at Sohn Fine Art and Lichtenstein Arts Center in the Berkshires of MA and in Smithy Pioneer Gallery’s Invitational Curated Photography Show: "Statement - "fifteen of the best photographers in upstate New York”, in Cooperstown, NY and numerous other galleries.  His work is included in a hardcover contemporary photography book, “The Pictorial List: Volume One – New York”, published in 2024.

Carl’s photography is in permanent collections of The Waskow Collection of Northern New England Museum of Contemporary Art (NNEMoCA) in Vermont and VIEW Arts in Old Forge, NY, and hangs on the walls of homes and businesses regionally as well as commercial locations such as the Hilton Hotel, medical offices practices in and around the Burlington, VT area, and in the boardroom at Fletcher Allen Hospital.

He has taught photography with Adirondack Photography Institute, Inlet, NY; Shelburne Art Center, Shelburne, VT; in his own classes at various NY and VT locations; and has led photography tours in the Adirondacks.  In addition to his self-study of photography and art, Carl has attended numerous photography workshops and is deeply inspired and influenced by abstract painters and the work of other photographers.

Some people use cameras to make “pretty pictures”.  Carl Rubino uses his to make art.  Whether creating photographic abstract works using in-camera multiple exposure techniques to transform deteriorated painted surfaces, found subjects or parts of our natural environment into what he envisions as an abstract rendering; envisioning human form as sculpture; using reflections as a basis of abstraction; diving deep into the subconscious to render a conceptual body of work; or even using vintage cameras and black and white film to render landscape, and an occasional abstract, as an homage to Ansel Adams, Carl’s work is about his vision as an artist.

As Thoreau once said: “It’s not what you look at that matters. It’s what you see”.  Come see how Carl Rubino creatively interprets what he envisions through the lens of his camera.
